3 Things to Do to Help with Food Insecurity

College is extremely expensive for students. Sadly, not every student has the ability to attend without making major sacrifices. This causes many students to lose their food security. Many would go hungry and skip multiple meals to continue their studies, which can be dangerous. It is important to know what to do if you are food insecure. Here are 3 examples:

1 – Go to Food Pantry (on or off campus)

Food pantries offer free food to those in need. Some universities have their own food pantries located on campus. If you need the food, stop by the pantry whenever it’s open. The food there usually lasts for a long time, so it may be more convenient to stock up for the week if your schedule prevents you from going there frequently.

If your college does not have a food pantry, then you can search for any open pantries outside of campus. You must plan accordingly, because it may take much longer to get to travel to the pantry.

2 – Apply for SNAP benefits

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP, is a government program dedicated to providing food for people around or below the poverty level. You will receive financial support, which can go straight to your food funds. Be sure to look online and see which SNAP is the closest to your area.

3 – Search for Deals Apps

Many local and major food chains offer a wide variety of Student discounts. These discounts often reside on phone apps. With a valid student I.D, you can use these apps to get discounts, deals, and even free food.

On top of that, there are apps such as FeedShare, which helps users locate free food. These locations may include festivals and other events. Remember to travel safely and make sure that the food is safe to eat.

While saving money on food, remember to use your benefits wisely. Always have some food in your dorm, especially non-perishable food. This will guarantee that you have something nearby to eat if you become sick, injured, tired, or busy. It is crucial to have access to food so you can have the energy and willpower to ace your classes. Check out the following links for some food banks and SNAPs in Philadelphia.
