SCHOLAR IN THE SPOTLIGHT: ALAN HUANG

If you could write a message inside a fortune cookie, what would it be?
If I could write a message inside a fortune cookie it would be “When life gives you 100 reasons to cry, give life 1000 reasons to smile.”

Why did you choose your school? Why did you choose your major?
I chose Penn State Abington because it was close to home. Also, I couldn’t afford to go to a lot of the expensive colleges so Penn State was the best fit. I chose to major in criminal justice because I knew it was my passion ever since I was little.

What three things motivate you the most to succeed?
My family plays a huge role in my life and is definitely the biggest motivating factor for me. Out of the three things that motivate me the most to succeed, the first is being doubted by some of my family members in my pursuits. This fuels me even more because I have a strong desire to prove them wrong. Next I would say that I’m highly motivated to support my parents and to one day give them the dream house they’ve always wanted. And lastly, I’m motivated by the idea of having a better life for myself.

What do you love the most about college?
The thing I love most about college is the freedom that comes with it. I love being independent and able to make my own decisions as a young adult. I can decide what courses I want to take at which time and it allows me to take full responsibility in preparing myself for the real world.

What do you love the least about college?
The thing I love least about college is the stress that often comes with it. Between all of the assignments, papers, midterms and finals, it can sometimes be overwhelming. Even though it can be really stressful at times, I think I’ve done a good job of learning to deal with it.

What do you plan to do after college?
After I graduate, I plan on getting a job in the field of criminal justice. It will be an important milestone for not only me, but for my family. I want to really show people that I’ve gotten the most out of my college experience and am now fully prepared to make it in the real world.
